Resources - tips page 1
Mar 2013 update
Apologies to anyone coming across this page from a search engine link... well out of date as we await release of Revit 2014... but still occasionally useful ;-)
the rate of acquisition of Revit tips makes it more of a scribbling pad...

Revit tips
- in no particular order yet...

- when you copy a Level a view is not made automatically.

- when you use the Level tool a floor and ceiling plan are made automatically.

- when you delete a floor or ceiling plan view Revit does not delete the Level.

- views are always associated with a specific Level and cannot be changed to another level.

- levels that have no views appear black (target symbol)

- levels that have views appear blue (target symbol)

- Use Transfer project standards to load system families (roofs, walls, floors, railings, fences and stairs) and make sure the project you wish to load INTO is active before going to File->Transfer Project Standards. Uncheck all options and just tick the bits you want.
You can find UK-specific roofs, walls, floors, railings, fences and stairs in the Metric/System Families folder. Once loaded they are added to the Type list automatically.

- 3D sections are created by making a section (or any view), making a 3D view, go to main View menu and choose 'Orient' then from sub-menu the option 'To Other View...' and select section from list. The section may appear the same in the 3D view but you can now move the camera away from the orthogonal view.

- Elevations: window and door opening markers are called 'Elevation swing' in the View Properties->Visibility/Graphic Overrides for Doors and Windows. Uncheck them to make them disappear from the View
- door and window tags are found in the same place as above but under the 'Annotation Categories' tab

- Stairs: to make balusters sit on treads when there are no strings click the default railing (by default stairs are created with the railing on top of the string) and 'flip arrows' will appear. Click the flip arrow and the railing will flip inside the stair boundary, whereupon the balusters will sit on the tread - otherwise they will retain alignment with the missing strings.

- easiest way to hide level markers, elevation markers or anything in Revit is to right-click it and choose 'Hide in View' and either 'element' for a one off or 'category' for all of that type of object. Find them again by clicking the light bulb icon at the bottom of the View window

- to change the look of an object in a View, the simplest method can be to just right-click on it and choose 'Override Graphics in View' again with sub-options. A dialogue then allows you to check/uncheck visible/halftone/transparent or further options are available.

- Roofs: simplest way to create a roof with slate oversails to bargeboards etc. is to make 2 roofs.
To make the 'slate' roof have a square end set the 'Rafter cut' property of the roof to be '2 cut square' and the 'Fascia depth' value to be the same as the overall depth of the 'slate' roof.

- Roofs: to vary the wallplate height when editing roofs. Notice that 'Properties' button top left next to the Type box is for the individual sketch elements (or Ctrl+clicked to do several at once) whereas the 'Roof Properties' button on the left of screen which appears while within the Sketch editor is for the entire roof. Thus you can vary the wallplate height globally from the latter but locally from the former (see the excellent dgcad.com video tutorials on the subject for Revit 9.1)

- Roofs: splitting roof sketch lines created using 'Pick Walls' and attempting to move the split points will give errors (as when creating dormer roofs with 'Slope Arrows'). Create the roof using 'Lines' instead and then you can dimension the split points and nudge the points or adjust them precisely (tab while hovering the cursor over the split point and eventually the split point will pre-highlight - or dimension to the split points).

- there is no Area measure tool, you have to create rooms

- to dimension in 3D or section views, dimensions are created on the current workplan, and so all you need to do is draw a reference plane, name it (via Properties button) and then switch workplane to that reference plane.

- Drawing 2D: Component tool will not load 2D detail components - for that you need the Detail Component tool found under the Drafting menu

- Drawing 2D: need to see the centre of a drafting(sic) circle? Click Properties and tick 'center mark visible'

- Project Browser: do not 'capture' a render into the Project browser, as this can slow down display, export it to a file and then import it to a sheet

- Disjoin Option when moving walls: Select a wall then the Move tool - an Option called 'Disjoin' is in the dynamic toolbar at the top of the View window. Check the box to stop other walls and maybe floors moving with the wall (found on the bimarchitect blog ;-)

- Revit into 3DSMax - Autodesk white paper : Found on David Light's blog for Jan 14th 08

- Revit type catalog - Augi thread : Discussion of how to manipulate Type Catalogs (sic)
