Oak timbers meet - originally black with age and having been painted so over the centuries the original colour can be restored by treatment with micro-abrasives, a messy business but can produce good results - ask first on Listed Buildings though
Routine in cottage alterations but seldom seen by most people is what's inside a Lake District rubble stone wall
Setting out the underfloor heating pipes in the kitchen and dining areas - such pipes are much improved in toughness recently

Oak trusses probably pre-date the building, retained and carefully studded round so as to give the impression of walls supporting beams although the truss is self supporting
During stripping out the builders pointed out some original plaster which seemed to contain grain as a filler - quite unique in my experience
