v16.2a -
a new release is here apparently - should have a CD soon - sounds like they
might have improved the 'Mount 3D Model in Image' tool which I am currently
trying to figure out ...
26.09.01 see webboard -
Hmmm.... I guess 16.2a is just a CD issue of 16.2 with service release 2
already applied?
27.09.01
see webboard -
No, there are some improvements - one I have noticed is that the Help text
in the 'Advanced' settings of the Import dialogue is now in English. www.allplan-usa.com
are going to put up a 'What's new in 16.2a' soon.
More changes at the top... Nemetschek
Press Release today (must be important - released in English at same
time as German version!) announces arrival of Wolfgang Hilpert as CTO. (OK,
I admit it - I didn't know what a 'CTO' was either - 'Chief Technology Officer'
apparently.)
v17?... nothing
definite on v17 but rumours sound good - a big increase in speed is a regular
rumour. Nemetschek seem to have a new version each year (? don't know for
sure since I started at v16! ) and so maybe release by the end of the year?
To be honest I am very happy with 16.2 at the moment.
Freebies!?... very
kind I am sure of Graphisoft UK to give us all a demo version of Archicad
6.5 on a mini-cd within 'Architecture Today' magazine this morning (I wonder
how many recipients spent as much time as I did cleaning the glue off the
back?) - Anyway to be fair I gave it a go ... some nice features at a glance
but I still don't like it's 'you choose from our list' kind of approach
as opposed to the more 'design it the way you want it' approach of Allplan.
As a bonus if you browse the CD and the demo installation folders you will
find quite a few textures and bitmaps.
Update
22.09.01 - Persevered with the Demo - even worked through the
Tutorial. Ummm... to be honest I was disappointed. I have great admiration
for Graphisoft as a company and what they have achieved and there
are many happy Archicad users out there and I can see that at a glance
the product seems attractive. However once you get into the nitty-gritty
of modelling in 3D, for me it does not really work. The whole approach
is so modular rather than allowing you to create your own 3D objects
(unless you are a 'script-kiddie' :), and you cannot move around the
3D view in real time - you have to stop, move, stop, move and the
'photo' render is not very good and slow. You cannot seem to 'walk'
through the design in real time unless I am missing something, I could
not see anything about tracing over scanned-in images or much about
2D drawing tools generally although they must be there since there
are elevations etc in the supplied models. The context-related right-click
menus are very limited in scope. I do not see how it could cope with
free-form windows, sloping walls and suchlike - although such things
may be achievable by advanced users. On the plus side you can have
arrows on the end of lines (!) and auto-balustrading to stairs, the
properties boxes are clever and there is a 'smooth' integrated look
to the interface.
Interesting to see the package and try it out (honest!) and while
I can understand why some designers would like it - no offence, but
it's not for me.
I came to the same conclusion last year when I researched Archicad
extensively and had a full dealer demonstration here in the office
before choosing Allplan FT.

Nemetschek UK call in... Clive
Flynn from Nemetschek and Michael Axon from CAD Ltd. called in to the office
today on their way to giving another presentation of Allplan (I wish I had
their stamina!). An enjoyable and upbeat discussion. Sounds like various
initiatives are under way or in the pipeline to promote Allplan and support
users here :)
DaimlerChrysler choose Allplan... a
Nemetschek press release about the deal with DaimlerChrysler to use Allplan
to redesign all their showrooms - available in the 'press release' section
of cadconsulting-usa.com
or in the original German version of last week at nemetschek.de
=============================================================
...
what can you say?...
heartfelt thoughts to all in the US.
'Allplan
for rent...' clarification. (see item below 31.08.01):
I am
told that this new scheme being run in the UK only (as far as I know) is
actually a Leasing arrangement for those who want to spread out the cost
of buying Allplan - with the benefit to the user that they own the software
at the end of the lease period. This seems better than the Revit and Autodesk
methods which are endless rentals where you never actually own the package
and ultimately pay more than an outright purchase.
Best Wishes... to
Emil Metchikian who leaves Nemetschek today to return to Architecture.
Quote
of the year??...
tucked away in a corner of the Nemetschek World Newsletter (downloadable
from the allplan-usa
site) is a remarkable comment about how Allplan fared at the 'Teamwork
2001' event at the RIBA HQ in London earlier this year...
"...It
was a great opportunity to prove our ability to exchange data with other
software platforms using IFC, DGN and DWG and DXF formats. Surprising was
that neither other vendor [Autodesk
& Bentley]
was
able to export and import in all the data formats just Nemetschek!"
[My
emphasis]
Update 03.10.01 - just noticed a review of
Teamwork 2001 in the RIBA Journal - slipped in near the end of the article
is a mention that a lack of IFC compatibility in Microstation prevented
full exchange of model information. (There
is no truth at all in the rumours circulating afterwards that the whole
event was 'rigged' to favour Microstation!)
Allplan
for rent...
interesting to see a monthly subscription offer flashed in the corner of
the full page Nemetschek advert in the latest issue of the RIBA Journal.
All
Nemetschek press releases..
just come across cadwire.net
site which contains links to all Nemetschek press releases in English.
Includes all the old Vectorworks ones as well if you are really keen! The
news section of cadwire is awesome - more stories than you can take
in.... liked the one about the Elsa Gloria III graphics card (my current
favourite) getting a 'perfect' score in the Cadalyst
Labs tests reported in the August issue of the magazine.
Update
31.08.01
- allplan-usa.com
now have Nemetschek press releases link on the front page of their site.
FAQs
return from holiday..
German FAQs updates have reappeared and so I assume everyone at Munich is
now back from holiday :)
Castle by..?
Raised a smile when I looked through the post this morning... a flyer for
a software package featuring a large picture of Neuschwanstein Castle -
turn the card over and it's from Graphisoft! (the castle being on Nemetschek's
doorstep in Bavaria I wondered if it was a coincidence - made me chuckle
anyway). The marketing and rolling demonstration roadshow for Archicad is
relentless in the UK - must be costing them a bit.
Sensible
name...
I notice that allplan-usa.com have now called their link to the webboard
'Allplan User Group' - good idea.
Allplan
on the web...
A journalist recently asked me why I maintain this site. It started as an
'aide-memoire' to myself - as I discovered techniques and features of Allplan
it provided a record - but as there was very little information on Allplan
on the web I decided to post the information in case it was of use to others...
12 months on and tenlinks.com
for Allplan still looks a bit thin compared to tenlinks.com entries
for Archicad
or Autocad
or Graphisoft
(Hey! how come Graphisoft get 2 entries?) or Microstation
or Turbocad
(!).
On a not-unrelated note I was telephoned recently by someone from the IT
and CAD 'analysts' Cambashi.com
wanting to know about Allplan support and what I thought about a trend by
some CAD companies towards web-based support to cut costs. ... never did
find out why they wanted to know... (suggestions on a postcard to the usual
address? :)
Nemetschek
press release
of today details corporate
changes
and strategy for tackling the downturn in German construction market. General
message is 'sales up, profits down' and a heartening increase in foreign
earnings. All very interesting, and sounds like there are more changes to
come...
CADDESK
AEC magazine -
came out while I was away (Herr Schwendner from Nemetschek features on the
cover - nice one!) - interesting set of articles from Autodesk, Nemetschek,
Graphisoft and Revit (Bentley were asked apparently but I do not see an
article from them?) on why users should change from 2D to 3D. OK, so I'm
biased (I gave some quotes for the article) but I thought the Nemetschek
article was well presented.
It seems to take about a month for the online version to appear on the cadserver.co.uk
website but most UK Architects will receive a free copy anyway.
Also a feature review of the 'D-Board' by Nemetschek elsewhere in this issue
and a mention of the release of version 16.2 of Allplan FT.
Holidays
- while wandering
around the Zeppelin
museum
in Friedrichshaven last week I was pleasantly surprised to come across the
original drawings of the competition winning entry in the Allplan student
competition mentioned recently (see
News Archive ) for a Zeppelin hangar (as below).
It looked even
more impressive viewed up close. Good museum by the way and we saw the Zeppelin
NT flying near Konstanz. Late
Update - Pure
coincidence but the above Zeppelinhalle has now appeared in a flash animation
on the front page of www.nemetschek.de...
it's a small world! :)
(note that these animations change every few months)
Holidays
- no updates
until 12th August - we're off to sunny Germany for our holidays! Bodensee
(Lake Constance) this year.
Service
release 2 for v16.2 -
gives you a nice reassuring feeling when the first service release appears
for the latest version and there are very few fixes within it. Available
now from www.allplan-usa.com
or www.nemetschek.de
No more FAQs? -
it would seem as part of the changes going on at nemetschek.de they have
decided to password protect the FAQ areas. Ho Hum....
Update 14:00 -
Don't know what's happened but they're back!! :)
Update
19:00 - Even better news! www.allplan-usa.com
(same site as www.cadconsulting-usa.com but shorter to type!) are going
to translate the best of the FAQs and put them up on their site within the
next few weeks.
I also notice they have added the cute little (free) CAD viewer and mark-up
program 'Capri' to their download site. (There are some postings to the
webboard lately
about how to use Capri - under 'Rendering/Presentation'.)
Nemetschek
World Newsletter -
Great idea - download from cadconsulting-usa.com's
site - click 'News' and then click the Newsletter topic whereupon it should
automatically download and open in your browser. Lots of interesting stuff
about Allplan from around the World - even a mention of this humble site!
:)
Cinema
4D XL v 7.1 -
there's no stopping those talented people at Maxon - v7.1 just released
- a free upgrade to v7 users.

FAQs
-
There seem to be some ongoing improvements to the German language FAQs
on nemetschek.de with a
search facility added recently and almost daily updates to the general
list of FAQs - not all of them are for Allplan but interesting if
you can understand the language or make use of the www.systransoft.com
web page translation facility. (A reminder that English language FAQs
are available on www.cadconsulting-usa.com's
website under 'Support' - they are useful but not as up to date as the
German ones.)
More
v16.2 -
More good news - the text editor now seems to default to 'paragraph text'.
:-)
More
v16.2 -
Save/Load customised window layouts! Brilliant.
v16.2
received today -
as usual many more things have been added than are described in the 'What's
new guide'. The most immediately useful feature is the 'docking' option
for the animation window. Again, as usual they've been playing around
with the shortcut menus! Project Attributes seem to be accessible now
(or more likely are easier to find) to single users. Still trying to get
the hang of using the clipboard feature.
More soon...
More
16.2 -
The Help file seems rather better... Ah... got it, for Copy by Clipboard,
select elements, use the 'Copy' on the 'Edit'
menu - see the Help (or 'Hilfe' as it still says on the Help application
menu bar) - see topic 'Using the Clipboard'
for detailed instructions.
This gets better!... you can now rotate copied objects with the '+'
and '-' keys while they are on the end of
the cursor awaiting positioning - excellent... still does not work for
the old way of copying though - and so the first thing to do is to make
shortcut keys for the new commands or copy their icons onto a usable toolbar
('Tools->Customise') although 'Paste
to original position' does not have an icon... Presumably to make
it harder to copy elements into the original drawing files by mistake.
First glitsch - Something has happened to
the assigning Shortcut keys error pop-up within the 'Tools->Customise'
dialogue, there is no text on the pop-up except 'Yes' and 'No' - but what
is the error and what are the options for?
